Hail Damage Indianapolis

How to tell if your home has storm damage…

There is a saying in Indiana…”If you don’t like the weather, stick around…it’ll change.”  When weather changes as fast as ours, severe storms seem to come along with it.

The storm has moved on but now you are left wondering if your house has received any damage.  Sometimes the damage is easy to see…blown-off shingles in the yard, leaks, etc.  But often times the damage is not immediately evident.  Hail and wind damage can seem harmless, but don’t be fooled.  What can seem like minor damages now can lead to major problems later.

Hail damage to your roof is hard to see from the ground, however there are some signs that you can check for:

  1. Check for any visible dents in the soft metal areas of your roof.  This would include vents, flashings, metal awnings, metal valleys, skylights, etc.  Since these are soft metal they will not only show signs of hail damage, but they will also indicate the size of the hail that damaged your roof.
  2. Check the gutters and downspouts for any dents.  If you see a large amount of granules washed down in the downspout, this could also be a sign of hail damage.
  3. Scan the roof for any missing or cracked shingles.  Wind or large hail can actually cause a shingle to crack and eventually blow-off.  Remember that you may not be able to see this kind of damage without a rooftop inspection.
  4. Check your siding, fence, deck, mailbox, and air conditioner for damage.  Damage to these items could indicate damage to your roof as well.
  5. If the homes in your area are having their roofs repaired or replaced there is a good chance that your roof has been damaged as well.

If you spot a potential issue or suspect any sort of wind or hail damage after a severe storm, you should always contact a qualified roofing professional.  Many roofing contractors specialize in insurance restoration and offer free inspections.
